Abstract: Recounts history of "Russian America", which began in 1743 with series of expeditions starting from Kamchatka and Okhotsk to obtain furs. Describes Russian attempts to increase emigration to Alaska, and to plant permanent settlements with aim of establishing presence in face of Spanish, English and American incursions into Alaska in late 18th century.
