Record #189131:

Recent changes to Langjökull Icecap, Iceland: an investigation integrating airborne LiDAR and satellite imagery / Allen J. Pope.

Title: Recent changes to Langjökull Icecap, Iceland: an investigation integrating airborne LiDAR and satellite imagery / Allen J. Pope.
Author(s): Pope, Allen J.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Cambridge: Scott Polar Research Institute
Abstract: Presents application of photoclinometry using Landsat ETM+ band 4 imagery to interpolate incomplete DEM of Langjökull based on airborne LiDAR survey from 2007. Compares with 1997 dataset to derive specific mass balance of -0.99± 0.1 m/yr w.e., supporting predictions that Langjökull will disappear in next 200 years. Discusses possible systematic discrepancy with ice cap mass balance calculated from in situ measurements. Combines with 2001 DEM and Landsat imagery to examine mass balance and retreat of outlet Hagafellsjökull Vestari and identify potential future surge. Assesses photoclinometry technique for cryospheric research, identifying requirements of imagery such as accurate representation of low contrast surfaces and suitable solar azimuth and elevation.
