Record #189001:

Norway and the "winning" of Australian Antarctica / Noel D. Barrett.

Title: Norway and the "winning" of Australian Antarctica / Noel D. Barrett.
Author(s): Barrett, Noel D.
Date: 2009.
In: Polar Record. (2009.), Vol. 45(235) (2009)
Abstract: Examines history of British, Norwegian and Australian territorial claims in Antarctica from 1906-1939. British policy was initially formulated around value of whale oil from fisheries in South Atlantic waters, and after 1919 was developed by Leopold Amery into claim to whole continent. Following Imperial Conference in 1926 efforts were made to extend British jurisdiction through process which led to establishment of Australian Antarctic Territory in 1933. Norwegian whalers sought territory free of British control by claiming Bouvet Island in 1927. Tacit Norwegian support of British and Australian claims in return for British support of Norwegian claims west of Australian sector may bring into question role of Mawson's 1929-31 BANZARE expedition in securing Australian territorial claim.
