Abstract: Describes Herschel Island, seasonally inhabited island off western Arctic coast of Canada. It was designated as Yukon territorial park under Inuvialuit Final Agreement (1987) in recognition of physical and cultural significance. Island was named by Franklin on 15 July 1826. Franklin's wish was to honour the name Herschel, borne most prominently by the astronomer Sir William Herschel, his sister Caroline and son John.
