Record #188929:

Importance of "historic sites" on Heard Island for protection of scientific resources and environmental management of a World Heritage site / Janet Hughes, Estelle Lazer.

Title: Importance of "historic sites" on Heard Island for protection of scientific resources and environmental management of a World Heritage site / Janet Hughes, Estelle Lazer.
Author(s): Hughes, Janet.
Lazer, Estelle.
Date: 2000.
Abstract: Reviews location, extent, characteristics and significance of historic sites related to hunting of elephant seals and various scientific activities on sub-Antarctic Heard Island, based on fieldwork during 1986-87. Though sealing sites are generally acknowledged to have historic value, later sites such as first ANARE base at Atlas Cove are discussed in terms of recent date, unattractive appearance, rapid deterioration and hazards to wildlife. Atlas Cove site has value in terms of Australia's Antarctic history, but not all elements of site need necessarily to be preserved in situ. Discusses value of comparative studies of historical, archaeological and materials conservation information on historic sites on other sub-Antarctic islands; and importance of documentation of scientific artefacts and achievements at sites before clean up.
