Abstract: | Examines distribution of over 20 sites associated with 19th and early 20th century sealing industry on sub-Antarctic Heard Island, with particular reference to differences between sites at various locations around island, based on fieldwork in 1986-87. Discusses 19th century sealing technology; diverse ethnicity and cultural composition of sealing gangs; threat posed by coastal erosion to remains of sealers' camps on beaches; tryworks on raised stone platforms as form of sealing architecture unique to Heard Island; use of caves as shelters; and general living and working conditions on island. |
