| Abstract: | Describes collections of 23 macroinvertebrate taxa associated with seaweed Durvillaea antarctica holdfasts and 58 invertebrate taxa associated with artificial substrata collectors from shallow-water and intertidal habitats at sub-Antarctic Heard Island. Fauna sampled possessed strong biogeographic affinities with Kerguelen Island fauna and slightly lesser affinity with fauna recorded at Macquarie Island, but negligible affinity with Antarctic. Experiments involving offshore tethering of D. antarctica holdfasts indicated that epifaunal invertebrates rapidly abandoned detached holdfasts, but that those few species surviving after one day could probably survive long periods adrift. Discusses hypothesis that Durvillaea antarctica provides major dispersal vector for benthic fauna in Southern Ocean. |
