Record #188923:

Management considerations for the Heard Island lava tube caves / Kevin Kiernan, Anne McConnell.

Title: Management considerations for the Heard Island lava tube caves / Kevin Kiernan, Anne McConnell.
Author(s): Kiernan, Kevin.
McConnell, Anne.
Date: 2000.
Abstract: Describes system of bedrock lava tube caves in largely pristine condition on Azorella Peninsula on sub-Antarctic Heard Island. Significant and sometimes fragile attributes associated with cave geomorphology, geology, hydrology, atmospheres, soils, microbiology, flora, fauna, vertebrate palaeontology, archaeology and safety considerations mean that caves require special management, and use for recreation, tourism or science may seriously impact cave environments. Discusses restricted access under Heard Island Wilderness Reserve Management Plan as appropriate management regime.
