Abstract: Presents history of international trade in furs centred on Bering Strait region during 18th and 19th centuries. Bering Strait formed nexus of circumpolar fur trade in which Russians, British, Americans and members of 50 native nations competed and cooperated. Desire to dominate fur trade fuelled European expansion into most remote regions of Asia and America, and was agent of massive change in these regions.
