Record #188857:
Through the lens of the polar years: changing characteristics of polar research in historical perspective / Aant Elzinga.
Title: | Through the lens of the polar years: changing characteristics of polar research in historical perspective / Aant Elzinga. |
Author(s): | Elzinga, Aant. |
Date: | 2009. |
In: | Polar Record. (2009.), Vol. 45(235) (2009) |
Abstract: | Considers four international polar years as windows for highlighting changes in character of polar research over past 125 years. Approach taken may be described as "archaeology of knowledge". Suggests that, whereas work of first International Polar Year (IPY) (1882-83) reflected empirical inductivist philosophy of science, second IPY (1932-33) comprised mixture of problem-oriented and hypothesis-driven approaches. By time of International Geophysical Year (1957-58), theoretical foundations of polar research had grown stronger and focus shifted to larger scale geophysical processes. |
