"No whale, no music": Iñupiaq drumming and global warming / Chie Sakakibara.
Title: | "No whale, no music": Iñupiaq drumming and global warming / Chie Sakakibara. |
Author(s): | Sakakibara, Chie. |
Date: | 2009. |
In: | Polar Record. (2009.), Vol. 45(235) (2009) |
Abstract: | Explores effect of climate change on Iñupiaq cultural identity as "people of whales". Traditional whaling cycle reveals strong indivisibility of music, emotions, and place-based human identity. Iñupiat traditionally say "whale brings music", so music production and other customs are affected by whale harvest, which, in turn, is affected by predictability of environment and climatic conditions. |
