Abstract: Investigates ballasting and remineralisation controls of carbon sedimentation in Twilight Zone (100-1000 m) of Southern Ocean, using data on particulate organic carbon (POC), phosphorous, biogenic silica, and CaCO₃ collected during Southern Ocean Iron Experiment (SOFeX) in January-February 2002. Digital and SEM image analyses of particles was used to aid interpretation of chemical profiles. Results indicate that iron addition to already high biomass, low export (HBLE) waters will not cause mass sedimentation events. Stability of iron-induced HBLE condition is unknown, and better understanding of biological pump processes in non-HBLE sub-Antarctic waters is needed.
