Record #188684:

Skull foramina asymmetry in East Greenland and Svalbard polar bears (Ursus maritimus) in relation to stressful environments / Thea Ø Bechshøft.

Title: Skull foramina asymmetry in East Greenland and Svalbard polar bears (Ursus maritimus) in relation to stressful environments / Thea Ø Bechshøft.
Author(s): Bechshøft, Thea Ø.
Date: 2009.
In: Annales Zoologici Fennici. (2009.), Vol. 46(3) (2009)
Abstract: Investigates fluctuating assymmetry (FA) of foramina as measure of environmental stress in polar bear (Ursus maritimus) skulls from East Greenland and Svalbard. Levels of FA for each of 11 traits used in study were compared between sex/age groups (sub-adults, adult females, adult males), localities and periods (pre- and post-1960) using general linear models. Finds that adult males have higher levels of meristic FA in several traits than other sex/age groups; also that no correlation exists between bears' year of birth and FA, or between levels of contaminants and FA.
