Record #188681:

Is climate change causing the increased narwhal (Monodon monoceros) catches in Smith Sound, Greenland? / Martin Reinhardt Nielsen.

Title: Is climate change causing the increased narwhal (Monodon monoceros) catches in Smith Sound, Greenland? / Martin Reinhardt Nielsen.
Author(s): Nielsen, Martin Reinhardt.
Date: 2009.
In: Polar Research. (2009.), Vol. 28(2) (2009)
Abstract: Evaluates recent changes in narwhal (Monodon monoceros) catches in Siorapaluk, northernmost community in Greenland, in relation to effects of changing climate and uncertainty of stock delineation. Statistics show significant increase in narwhal catches by hunters after 2002, which does not appear to be result of increased effort. Hunters attribute increase to changed sea-ice conditions providing access by boat to Smith Sound as early as June and July. This indicates that climate change is likely to have considerable impact on narwhal hunting in northern Greenland.
