Abstract: Reviews Arctic social and human science activities in 2008, noting that at least 30 research proposals endorsed by International Polar Year (IPY) Joint Committee in 2005-06 received full funding and were operational by summer 2008. Considers measures to secure legacy of IPY, and to ensure that standing of human and social science research remains high. Notes increase in number of physical and natural scientists who seek to collaborate with polar residents in their research, and embrace themes and issues related to polar communities.
