Record #188356:

Impact of mining on rock glaciers and glaciers: examples from central Chile / Alexander Brenning.

Title: Impact of mining on rock glaciers and glaciers: examples from central Chile / Alexander Brenning.
Author(s): Brenning, Alexander.
Date: 2008.
Publisher: California: University of California Press
In: Darkening peaks : glacier retreat, science and society. (2008.),
Abstract: Notes hydrological importance of rock glaciers in dry Andes, expansion of Chilean gold and copper mining, legislation regarding use of water sources, including rock glaciers and glaciers, and obligatory environmental impact assessment. Geomorphological impacts at División Andina mine include disappearance of two rock glaciers. Proposed expansion implies further destruction or degradation. Aerial photos at Los Bronces show rock glacier alteration and removal. Discusses possible effects (geochemical, thermal, destabilisation) of waste rock deposition onto rock glaciers (velocity of one increased at least tenfold before stabilising at still elevated levels). Discusses proposed Pascua-Lama project that would remove 10 ha of glacier, approval on condition that ice removed be redeposited somewhere geomorphologically and altitudinally similar, and improbability that this would establish new glacier.
