New Zealand's glaciers: key national and global assets for science and society / John E. Hay, Tui L. Elliott.

Title: New Zealand's glaciers: key national and global assets for science and society / John E. Hay, Tui L. Elliott.
Author(s): Hay, John E.
Elliott, Tui L.
Date: 2008.
Publisher: California: University of California Press
In: Darkening peaks : glacier retreat, science and society. (2008.),
Abstract: Highlights contributions of New Zealand glacier research to understanding of Earth system, and identifies national and local consequences of dynamic nature of New Zealand's glaciers. Summarises status of New Zealand's more than 3000 glaciers, climatic conditions that produce such high mass turnover, and glaciers' global scientific significance and national economic and cultural importance. Notes that overall positive balances through 1980s and 1990s may have been replaced by more variable conditions. Considers ongoing importance of glaciers in light of changes in global climate and tourism, with particular reference to national policy and local resource management practices.
