Abstract: Notes importance of meltwaters from glaciers in Central Dry Andes to regional agricultural economies of Chile and Argentina, and presence of penitentes as distinguishing feature of glacier surfaces. Presents study of potential changes under climate warming of ablation regime during melt season, based on data from Juncal Sur and Río Plomo glaciers and considering influence of penitentes. Describes ablation modelling using physically based Snow Distributed Energy Balance Model (SnowDEM), which takes full account of topographic influences, and parameterization of penitentes as areas of increased roughness length. Discusses results for two warming scenarios, implications for future meltwater availability and requirements for improvement of predictions.
