Record #188350:

Alpinewide distributed glacier mass balance modelling: a tool for assessing future glacier change? / Frank Paul, and 4 others.

Title: Alpinewide distributed glacier mass balance modelling: a tool for assessing future glacier change? / Frank Paul, and 4 others.
Author(s): Paul, Frank.
Date: 2008.
Publisher: California: University of California Press
In: Darkening peaks : glacier retreat, science and society. (2008.),
Abstract: Uses distributed glacier mass balance model to examine whether such models can produce realistic mass balance values and ELAs from gridded climatic data sets applied to large catchments of several glaciers. Reviews glacier mass balance modelling before discussing model's main components (temperature, radiation, albedo, turbulent fluxes and precipitation) and presenting gridded data sets used for test region of Mischabel, Swiss Alps (includes Findelen and Schwarzberg glaciers). Discusses results of calculation, noting reasonable success over Findelen glacier, but difficulty reproducing observed inter-glacier variability. Suggests improvements, e.g., including effects of snow redistribution by wind and avalanches.
