Record #188349:

Long-term observations of glaciers in Norway / Liss M. Andreassen, and 4 others.

Title: Long-term observations of glaciers in Norway / Liss M. Andreassen, and 4 others.
Author(s): Andreassen, Liss M.
Date: 2008.
Publisher: California: University of California Press
In: Darkening peaks : glacier retreat, science and society. (2008.),
Abstract: Summarises long-term Norwegian glacier monitoring programme and main results. Notes that reliable observations began in first half of 18th century, during which some glaciers advanced by several kilometres, causing serious damage to farms. Systematic observation began around 1900. Describes surveys, glacier inventories and changing techniques. Observed changes include periods of advance in southern Norway, culminating around 1910, 1930 and late 1990s, within overall 20th century retreat by up to 2.5 km. Post-2000 retreat has been marked. In northern Norway most glaciers have retreated considerably since 1900. Presents nine glacier mass balance profiles, showing considerable variation with glacier altitude and continentality. Discusses recent retreats and likely effects of predicted global warming.
