Two Alpine glaciers of the past two centuries: a scientific view based on pictorial sources / Daniel Steiner, Heinz J. Zumbühl, Andreas Bauder.

Title: Two Alpine glaciers of the past two centuries: a scientific view based on pictorial sources / Daniel Steiner, Heinz J. Zumbühl, Andreas Bauder.
Author(s): Steiner, Daniel.
Zumbühl, Heinz J.
Bauder, Andreas.
Date: 2008.
Publisher: California: University of California Press
In: Darkening peaks : glacier retreat, science and society. (2008.),
Abstract: Reviews documentary data (illustrations, maps, descriptions, and quantitative measurements) to quantify fluctuations of Unteraar and Unterer Grindelwald Glaciers since their mid-19th century maximum extents. Noting importance of early studies on these glaciers to beginning of modern glaciology, analyzes remarkable development of representation techniques from drawings and topographic surveys to first scientific photographs within only 15 years. Describes construction of digital elevation models for five epochs for each glacier between 1861 and 2004, using sources such as early topographic maps, photogrammetric surveys, etc. Uses DEMs to calculate changes in glacier volume, area, length and thickness (Unteraar and Unterer glaciers thinned at rates of 0.42 and 0.48 m/yr respectively)
