Glacial hazards: perceiving and responding to threats in four world regions / Christian Huggel, Wilfried Haeberli, Andreas Kääb.

Title: Glacial hazards: perceiving and responding to threats in four world regions / Christian Huggel, Wilfried Haeberli, Andreas Kääb.
Author(s): Huggel, Christian.
Haeberli, Wilfried.
Kääb, Andreas.
Date: 2008.
Publisher: California: University of California Press
In: Darkening peaks : glacier retreat, science and society. (2008.),
Abstract: Presents physical scientist's view of glacial disasters and responses of local populations and authorities in four high-mountain areas, covering: glacier-clad volcanoes in Central Mexico, glacial lakes in Peruvian Cordillera Blanca, glacier instability in Macugnaga (Belvedere Glacier, Monte Rosa, Alps), and ice/rock avalanche (Kolka Glacier) disaster in North Caucasus. Demonstrates that social, cultural, economic and historic contexts are significant determinants of local response to glacial hazards, with lack of resources and poverty, ethno-religious tradition, distrust of authorities, ignorance of risk, and economic dependence on tourism influencing risk perception and management.
