Environment, history, and culture as influences on perceptions of glacier dynamics: the case of Mt. Shasta / Barbara Wolf, Ben Orlove.
Title: | Environment, history, and culture as influences on perceptions of glacier dynamics: the case of Mt. Shasta / Barbara Wolf, Ben Orlove. |
Author(s): | Wolf, Barbara. Orlove, Ben. |
Date: | 2008. |
Publisher: | California: University of California Press |
In: | Darkening peaks : glacier retreat, science and society. (2008.), |
Abstract: | Examines case of Mt. Shasta, where California's largest glaciers are found. Reviews historical and recent observations of glaciers, which generally advanced over second half of 20th century, and discusses influence of mountain's geometry and volcanic geology on them, including percolation of meltwater through volcanic soils and debris flows and outburst floods. Examines history of human settlement and results of survey of residents' perceptions of mountain, including attitudes to potential loss of snow cover and glacial retreat. Also examines controversial issues of use of public lands for forestry, skiing, etc., and of commercial water bottling. |
