Challenges of living with glaciers in the Swiss Alps, past and present / Ellen Wiegandt, Ralph Lugon.

Title: Challenges of living with glaciers in the Swiss Alps, past and present / Ellen Wiegandt, Ralph Lugon.
Author(s): Wiegandt, Ellen.
Lugon, Ralph.
Date: 2008.
Publisher: California: University of California Press
In: Darkening peaks : glacier retreat, science and society. (2008.),
Abstract: Examines how mountain populations have balanced negative and positive effects of glaciers and their potential adjustment to change. Focusing on Valais, describes arrangements for distributing resources, including property rules governing water resources. Discusses glacier risks and human responses in pre-industrial society, including response to Giétro disaster of 1818 in which ice dam collapse flooded valley. Describes ongoing risk management. Illustrates mountain cryosphere management of potential hazards with cases of partial collapse of terminal moraine of Dolent Glacier, and effects on rock glaciers of changing permafrost in area of Tsarmine Glacier. Discusses effects that changing use of glaciers and meltwater, e.g. decline of agriculture and increases of hydroelectricity and tourism, have on risk perception and response.
