Abstract: Develops express method of determining unfrozen water content of sediments at sub-zero temperatures based on pore water potential. Exact thermodynamic relationships permit calculation of unfrozen water content, taking account of external (gas) pressure, and estimation of "pore water-gas-gas hydrate" equilibrium for defining non-clathrated water content, depending on temperature and pressure. Based on analysis of experimental data on pore water potential of various sediments, argues that pore water enthalpy should be considered distinct from volumetric water enthalpy in "dry" sediments. Calculates unfrozen water content over range of subzero temperatures for Kudinovskaya clay using pore water potential data. Finds results in good agreement with experimental observations.
