| Abstract: | Analyzes geomorphology of two debris ridges on eastern slopes of Mt Allen and discusses their possible process-origins, noting that site could represent southernmost site of glaciation in New Zealand. Uses evidence from topographic and spatial positioning, geomorphology, sedimentology and palaeoclimatological extrapolations to reconstruct two small former cirque glaciers with ELAs around 600 m. Proposes that ridges are terminal moraines marking down-basin extents of glaciers forming during Last Glacial Maximum. Suggests Mt Allen glaciation was limited to niche sites on lee sides of upland areas, in contrast to extensive glaciation of Southern Alps. |
