| Abstract: | Reports decline in abundance of Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) of ~15% per year during 1980s in Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands and Gulf of Alaska. Considers factors contributing to decline. Discusses one key hypothesis: reduction in sea lion prey biomass and quality caused by either commercial fishing or an "oceanographic regime shift" resulting in substantial changes in abundance or availability of dominant prey species, which may subsequently have resulted in nutritional stress. |
