Record #188291:

Genetic analysis of twinning in Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) / Joseph I. Hoffman, Jaume Forcada.

Title: Genetic analysis of twinning in Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) / Joseph I. Hoffman, Jaume Forcada.
Author(s): Hoffman, Joseph I.
Forcada, Jaume.
Date: 2009.
In: Journal of Mammalogy. (2009.), Vol. 90(3) (2009)
Abstract: Uses 9 highly polymorphic microsatellite markers to examine parentage of 11 putative pairs of twins in Antarctic fur seals breeding at Bird Island, South Georgia. Only 3 pairs (27%) were found to be genuine twins, indicating that suckling observations are unreliable means of identifying twins in this species. All twins were female, one pair being monozygotic and the other two dizygotic. Likelihood tests revealed that one pair of dizygotic twins was significantly more likely to be full siblings, whereas the other pair was more likely to be half siblings, indicating probably multiple paternity.
