Klebsiella pneumoniae epidemics: possible impact on New Zealand sea lion recruitment / Ian S. Wilkinson, and 5 others.

Title: Klebsiella pneumoniae epidemics: possible impact on New Zealand sea lion recruitment / Ian S. Wilkinson, and 5 others.
Author(s): Wilkinson, Ian S.
Date: 2006.
Publisher: Fairbanks, AK: Alaska Sea Grant College Program
In: Sea lions of the world : proceedings of the symposium Sea Lions of the World : Conservation and Research in the 21st Century, September 30-October 3, 2004, Anchorage, Alaska, USA. (2006.),
Abstract: Assesses effects of epidemics during 2001-02 and 2002-03 breeding seasons on Hooker's sea lions at sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands. Affected pups had acute suppurative arthritis or polyarthritis, cellulitis, peritonitis, pleuritis, or meningitis, but adults were not affected. Increase in mortality attributable to Klebsiella pneumoniae was 12.3% at 6 weeks and 10.1% at 10 weeks. Estimates of reduction in number of females recruiting to adult population from epidemic years indicate that by 2007-08 between 93 and 144 fewer females would be present, representing 2.3% to 4.6% of adult female population.
