Abstract: Measures specific area per unit volume (SSAv) of snow samples of various types using stereological method, and mean grain and pore sizes by run-length method. Samples were collected over four winters from sites in Hokkaido and Toyama prefectures, Japan. All were dry, with densities between 88 and 494 kg m⁻³ and SSAv between 1.50 and 9.98 mm⁻¹. Derives formula to predict SSAv from mean pore and grain sizes, finding SSAv inversely proportional to mean pore size and predicted SSAv sensitive to mean grain size, rather than density. Formula overestimates SSAv by about 13% compared with stereological methods, but is able to estimate SSAv variation caused by difference between snow types.
