Abstract: Describes new techniques for retrieving snow specific area (SSA), snow albedo and grain size from AATSR data and presents application using data from north-west coast of Greenland. Reports effective grain diameters around 0.5 mm, SSA around 150 cm²g⁻¹ and albedo close to 0.93. Techniques represent first retrieval of SSA spatial distribution from satellite data and could be applied to interpretation of other satellite, airborne and ground measurements.
