Abstract: Presents methodology for systematic discrimination and mapping of supraglacial cover types - snow, ice, ice-mixed debris (IMD) and debris. Presents two new indices derived from ASTER data: Normalized Difference Glacier Index (NDGI) and Normalized Difference Snow Ice Index (NDSII). Using test area in Chenab basin of Himalayas, demonstrates how combining these indices with Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) allows discrimination of snow, ice and IMD in systematic manner, and describes mapping and validation of results.
