Abstract: Presents study establishing usefulness of remotely sensed data for estimating heat flux from Grímsvötn and geomorphological mapping of caldera wall. Using Airborne Thematic Mapper (ATM) imagery and aerial photographs from 2001, in combination with meteorological data, identifies areas of distinct thermal activity along caldera wall, and estimates surface temperatures and heat flux from patches of open water along margin of subglacial lake. Estimates heat output from open water at ~18 MW, or 1% of base heat output from Grímsvötn. Presents geomorphological maps of caldera wall, including parts that cannot be safely mapped from the ground.
