Abstract: | Estimates total snow-covered area (SCA) using MODIS, NOAA and IRS datasets for 15 dates spread over 4 years, reporting good agreement with ground-based estimations. Analyses influence of aspect in SCA estimation, reporting that MODIS produced better results. Tests snow mapping accuracy with respect to elevation, reporting that MODIS sensed more snow and proved better at mapping snow under mountain shadow conditions. Higher spatial resolution allowed IRS to better map patchy snow cover. Higher temporal resolution of MODIS and NOAA raises chances of scenes being cloud-free. MODIS has automated snow-mapping algorithm. Concludes MODIS could be effective in SCA estimation for snowmelt runoff in Himalayan conditions. |
