Abstract: Examines atmospheric effects on retrieval of sea ice concentration from passive microwave sensors using simulated data typical for Arctic summer. Simulation includes contributions of cloud liquid water, water vapour and surface wind on microwave signatures. Uses plane parallel radiative transfer model to compute brightness temperatures over surfaces containing open water, first-year (FY) and multi-year (MY) ice and their combinations. Synthetic retrievals using NASA TEAM algorithm showed that for field of view filled only with FY ice, atmospheric effects are minimal.
