Advances in seasonal snow water equivalent (SWE) retrieval using in situ passive microwave measurements over first-year sea ice / A. Langlois, D.G. Barber.

Title: Advances in seasonal snow water equivalent (SWE) retrieval using in situ passive microwave measurements over first-year sea ice / A. Langlois, D.G. Barber.
Author(s): Langlois, A.
Barber, D. G.
Date: 2008.
In: International Journal of Remote Sensing. (2008.), Vol. 29(15-16) (2008)
Abstract: Presents seasonally valid SWE algorithm for first-year sea ice based on in situ passive microwave radiometry. Data were collected during winter 2003-04 as part of Canadian Arctic Shelf Exchange Study. Presented algorithm accounts for previous observations of two different patterns of seasonal snow evolution and is valid for temperatures between -5°C and -30°C and SWE in range 0-55 mm. Demonstrates that thermophysical properties and brightness temperatures behave quite differently in winter cooling period compared to warming period and that SWE algorithm models this with high degree of correlation. Compares with other algorithms and satellite sensor data.
