Abstract: | Presents numerical simulation of electromagnetic responses for snow in UK using radiative transfer-based semi-empirical HUT model, taking into account influences of soil surface, forest canopy and atmosphere on space-borne observed brightness temperature. Aims to assess model's applicability to UK snow depth and water equivalent estimation. Describes sensitivity tests to determine parameter most affecting modelled upwelling radiation from snow, comparison of model results with observed SSM/I brightness temperatures and inversion of brightness temperature for snow depth. Applies model to several multi-day records of snow depth and SSM/I observations from Winter/Spring 1995. Discusses negative and positive model biases observed for different periods. |
