| Abstract: | Describes model for sea spray icing on fixed offshore structures, noting reduced ice cover of Beaufort and Chukchi Seas may result in increased spray icing of rigs. Modelled accretion of small sea spray droplets onto 2-d structural section and components depends on liquid water content of spray cloud, wind speed, droplet diameter and object diameter. Obtains spray cloud's liquid water content from flux of film, jet and spume droplets from ocean surface and vertical velocity of droplets. Droplet flux increases dramatically with wind speed. Presents modelled icing rates for semi-submersible drilling rigs Ocean Bounty (winter 1979-80) and Sedco 708 (Jan 1983), and compares with observations of icing rate and ice accumulation. |
