Abstract: Examines modern observations of temperature field of Siberian permafrost, noting that permafrost currently occupies about 80% of territory, and discusses potentially accelerated retreat as result of warming during 20th and 21st centuries. Reviews decreases in permafrost extent since Late Pleistocene and discusses recent and projected warming trends, predicting northward movement of permafrost border by 300-400 km in case of 1.2-2°C warming by 2050. Estimates changes in permafrost parameters under changing climatic conditions, reporting possibility that in some areas frozen rocks will thaw from surface to depth of 12-17 m by 2100.
