Abstract: Investigates welcoming receptions held on return of Payer-Weyprecht Polar Expedition (1872-74) as part of Scandinavian and Central European discourse of Arctic and of Arctic exploration. Expedition was subjected to long series of public celebrations on way home to Austria-Hungary via Norway, Sweden and Germany. Celebrations are seen as constituting discourse primarily composed of performative and material elements. Discourse is formed by values such as heroism, national identities, local identities, class and gender.
