Explorer without a country: the question of Vilhjalmur Stefansson's citizenship / Janice Cavell, Jeff Noakes.
Title: | Explorer without a country: the question of Vilhjalmur Stefansson's citizenship / Janice Cavell, Jeff Noakes. |
Author(s): | Cavell, Janice. Noakes, Jeff. |
Date: | 2009. |
In: | Polar Record. (2009.), Vol. 45(234) (2009) |
Abstract: | Discusses confusion that has long existed about Vilhjalmur Stefansson's citizenship. Stefansson was Canadian by birth, but became American citizen (according to laws then in force) when his father took American citizenship in 1887. After he took command of Canadian Arctic Expedition in 1913, Stefansson was careful to give impression that his status had never changed. However, although he swore oath of allegiance to George V in May 1913, he failed to take other steps necessary to restore him to Canadian citizenship. |
