Abstract: Describes siida, Saami local community that has existed from ancient times, and reindeer herding siida that has formed as adaptation of ancient siida principles to large-scale reindeer herding. Considers extent to which traditional Saami reindeer herding knowledge can be said to correspond with scientific knowledge. Discusses effects of Norwegian parliament's recognition in 2007 of siida as basic institution regarding land rights, organisation and daily herding management.
