Abstract: Comprises seven essays discussing unique role of social economy in northern Canada. Social economy consists of organisations that seek to enhance social, economic and environmental conditions of communities. Organisations use tools and some methods of business, on not-for-profit basis, to provide social, cultural, economic, health and other benefit to communities. Types of social economy organisations in northern Canada are retail and artistic cooperatives, indigenous rights organisations, recreational and cultural organisations, charities, foundations, credit unions, and other social enterprises.
