Title: | Farewell dear Scotia: Scottish Arctic whalers / Malcolm Archibald. |
Author(s): | Archibald, Malcolm. |
Date: | 2008. |
Publisher: | Isle of Lewis: Islands Book Trust |
In: | Whaling and the Hebrides : the history of island whalers in the South Atlantic and whaling in and around the Hebrides. The proceedings of a three-day conference held in Harris, 16th-18th August 2007. (2008.), |
Abstract: | Presents brief history of Hebridean whaling activities in Arctic from 1750-1913. Notes that, although commercial Arctic whaling was limited to ports of east coast, Hebridean whaling seems to have coexisted with, and possibly pre-dated, famous ships that sailed from Dundee, Peterhead and Leith. By early 20th century, when last steam whaler had ceased to be active, Hebrideans were continuing ancient whaling tradition. |
