Record #188061:

The Pay Streak spectacle: representations of race and gender in the amusement quarters of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition / Manish Chalana.

Title: The Pay Streak spectacle: representations of race and gender in the amusement quarters of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition / Manish Chalana.
Author(s): Chalana, Manish.
Date: 2009.
In: Pacific Northwest Quarterly. (2009.), Vol. 100(1) (2009)
Abstract: Describes Pay Streak, amusement quarters of 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. Pay Streak was located on periphery of exposition but was central to goal of making it financially viable. Argues that although Pay Streak sought to offer "new mediums of entertainment and opportunities for vicarious travel in other lands", international nature was exaggerated, and in reality it merely confirmed and extended authority of US corporate, political and scientific leadership.
