Scientific value of Arctic sea ice imagery derived products / United States. Commitee on Climate, Energy and National Security.

Title: Scientific value of Arctic sea ice imagery derived products / United States. Commitee on Climate, Energy and National Security.
Author (corporate): United States.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Washington, DC: National Academies Press
Abstract: Assesses usefulness to studies of environmental change of several hundred 1-m resolution overhead images of sea ice in Arctic. Images date from 1999 onward and were derived from classified imagery collected as part of Medea programme from initially four, later six sites. Discusses importance of sea ice to global climate system and its representation in interactive climate models before discussing potential uses of Medea data set. These include snow depth, lateral melting, ice topography and albedo, ice thickness evolution, ice deformation, shear and crack patterns, melt pond recurrence, and ice as natural habitat. Includes recommendations for dissemination of Medea Literal Imagery Derived Products (LIDPs)
