Sites of belonging: recreating histories / Anna-Leena Siikala.

Title: Sites of belonging: recreating histories / Anna-Leena Siikala.
Author(s): Siikala, Anna-Leena.
Date: 2004.
Publisher: Helsinki: Finnish Literature Society
In: Creating diversities : folklore, religion and the politics of heritage. (2004.),
Abstract: Examines places of special meaning for Khanty, either as sacred places or those to avoid as they are thought to hold potential dangers. Describes holy groves of Udmurty and Mari and notes that rituals associated with these are still alive. Discusses hidden and visible nature of these groves, due partly to pressure from Christianisation and then Soviet ideology. Based on fieldwork in Udmurtiya in 1991-98 and Yamalo-Nenetskiy AO in 2000, 2002 and 2003.
