| Abstract: | Discusses ice observations made since 1976 in 14 caves between Primorsky Range and Lake Baikal (Baykal). Lists cave dimensions, climate, cave microclimate, etc., and describes ice forms (divided into congelation and sublimated groups). Identifies three types of underground cavities according to origin of coldness and accumulation of snow and ice: cold caves with sack-shaped morphology; thermoventilated caves, with airflow direction changing between cold and warm seasons; and karst pit, where ice forms by recrystallisation of snow and sublimated ice occurs near entrance. Proposes system of topographical signs for presentation of cave glaciation on underground maps ice caves as climate indicators. |
