Observations of Ekman currents in the Southern Ocean / Yueng-Djern Lenn, Teresa K. Chereskin.
Title: | Observations of Ekman currents in the Southern Ocean / Yueng-Djern Lenn, Teresa K. Chereskin. |
Author(s): | Lenn, Yueng-Djern. Chereskin, Teresa K. |
Date: | 2009. |
In: | Journal of Physical Oceanography. (2009.), Vol. 39(3) (2009) |
Abstract: | Uses high-resolution repeat observations of upper-ocean velocity in Drake Passage to resolve mean Ekman spiral and compute equatorward Ekman transport that constitutes shallowest limb of meridional overturning circulation of Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). Discusses balance between mean wind stress and Ekman transport; temperature of Ekman layer; and turbulent eddy viscosity. Mean Ekman currents decay in amplitude and rotate anticyclonically with depth, penetrating up to 100 m depth, above base of annual mean mixed layer at 120. |
