Abstract: Covers deformation of low-pressure ice by creep and fracture as basis for studying glaciers, ice sheets, floating ice cover and uppermost region of icy moons. Focuses on ice structure and defects, describing relationship with mechanical properties and interpreting observations and measurements in terms of physical mechanisms. Creep section includes modelling of ductile behaviour of isotropic and anisotropic ice in glacier flow. Fracture section includes forces on engineered structures and deformation of ice cover on Arctic Ocean. Anticipates ice mechanics applications in: glacier/ice sheet interaction with climate changes, dating of ice deep ice cores and projected behaviour of sea ice. Discusses knowledge transfer into fields of rock, mineral, metal and alloy mechanics.
